National Geographic Interactive Map of Italy

More than a fifth of the Italian territory is at risk of desertification and the water situation has worsened following a dry winter which saw rainfall reduced by a third compared to normal. Across the country, signs of water scarcity are fuelling fears of drought and desertification.

PROJECT:
Interactive Map

National Geographic asked us to recreate a google earth style map, to help convey this message and to take the users on a journey around the country, region by region to discover what is happening.

We had to do this without the benefit of the Google Maps API, so we recreated the map by sourcing and combining multiple layers, before building the interactive JS system that moves the user around the map as they scroll, or click, through the different regions.
